The Grand National

The race is open to horses aged seven years or older, handicapped to ensure a level playing field. The maximum field is 40 runners, making it a highly competitive event (Target Shooting Show).

The first official Grand National race took place in 1839, although there were precursor races before this. The race has a storied history, including memorable moments like Red Rum’s victory three times in the 1970s.

Red Rum:
The most famous horse in Grand National history, Red Rum, won the race three times (1973, 1974, and 1977) and finished second twice (1975 and 1976) (Gun Mart).
Longest Odds Winner:
The longest odds winner was Mon Mome in 2009, who won at odds of 100/1.
First Female Jockey to Win:
In 2021, Rachael Blackmore was the first female jockey to win the Grand National, riding Minella Times (Target Shooting Show).
The 2024 Grand National is scheduled to be held on April 13, 2024, continuing its tradition as one of the highlights of the British sporting year.
